Sweet Memory

Someone asked the other day if I had any favorite tv shows that often got me glued back when I was a kid. That was a tough one to be completely honest.

Incidentally my childhood years fell during the 80s, and I was quite privileged. No other reason for that because this was the era when tv shows were blooming like mad.

Lets see. Bear in mind this was when Astro was the thing of the future but still there were good programs such as McGyver, The A-Team, Opah, Knight Rider, Streethawk, Dynasty and a wholotta bunch of crap more. Apart from Dynasty, I kinda dug all but still they weren’t good enough to get that little Kerpie engrossed and in a state of trance-like fascinated.

So I didn’t bother to answer the question and left.

Then later that day, an ad of children’s junk food came to mind. The one where its trademark intro went something like “Tora kini datang lagi dengan permainan anak patung blow-up untuk menggembirakan kanak-kanak semua, bersama biskut rangup yang disaluti coklat…begitu digemari dan lazat sekali”…

Something like that. The legendary Mat Sentul was the main feature, swindling all the dumb kids every single time new toys was introduced.

That would be it then.

Such chocolate-y sweet childhood memory indeed.

The 80's do bring up sweet memories in my head growing up in perak mid eightiestill now and in kl frm 80-84..me still remember goin to watch Airwolf in the cinema bro bck in 85...the film was even reviewed in NST... my home in perak was just a stone throw away...but that was the first time i can clearly remember
goin to the theatre to watch a movie...the theatre was called Waldorf..
Another fond memory that i have is seein my father tweakin the TV to get TV3 transmission way bck in 84...i still remember that Tv3 used pics of flowers when they were out of transmission...and when TV3 came ..they had all the kool TV shows lke...Airwolf,A team,Magnum PI,Automan,Knight Rider,Simon and Simon,Macgyver, 3's Acompany... and lots more...miniseries like Civil War with Patrick Swayze..
Still remember Hammer House of Horror...used to give me nightmares...i sure miss those days..where i was glued to the TV everyday...
now i seldom watch TV at all...was a strange irony...
by the way TV3 will celebrate their anniversary in june...forgot the date..
and they were the first bck in 85 or 86 to come out with censorship ratings like M for mature content...

I was still in primary school when they had such gems like The Man From Uncle and The Fugitive. I would sulk all day if I missed The Man From Uncle coz they were so big back then. I still remember Robert Vaughn and David Macallum visited Malaysia.

Then we also got Get Smart. That agent Maxwell Smart was a real killer man. Thunderbird was another favourite of mine.

As for westerns we had Have Gun Will Travel, Mat Mastterson, The Virginian and man those were the days. There was even a Japanese serial called The Samurai.

Nope they didn't screen Debbie Does Dallas or Deep Throat, what a pity.

yo kerpov...i hated that tora ad, thought it was real cheezy and they gave free and lousy toys, which never worked like what you saw on the TV. It was just junk food ad. I was all out for Dynasty too. Yep! 80s big hair, bigger shoulder pads and those hideous clothes...made me cringe whenever i saw an old photos of myself!! But good old time of the 80s too, at least we were not stuck to the idiot box 24/7. happy weekend :)

Salam kerpie,

Hmm...no western on your list?

Doc,

Yup. But I wonder if he is still around or not. any idea ke doc? I mean, lama tak nampak dia la…

Farina,

Who could ever forget these ads? It had in a way concurred all the commercial slots in children’s program.

*yup, still remember LHOTP, especially the 2 cute little girls. It was pinky’s favorite!

Anba my man,

Glad I’ve opened up the can of worms. And thanks to people like you, all the memories suddenly comes gushing right back. back in 84, when tv3 came into all our lives we too, went through similar experience, becos the reception was a real crap. I still remember the station’s transmission only starts at 5, kicking off the day with daily dose of cartoon. Smurf was one of them…hehehe…awesome la bro. and atrwolf, how could I forget that? Magnum P.I too…

*yup…ding dang, kumkum and whollota junks. It was crazy la bro…

cikgu!

I know this wouldn’t surprise you but of all the shows you mentioned, only Debbie Does Dallas and Deep throat that somehow rings some bell…hehehehe…But these were all during the 70s. don’t ask me how but I managed to catch some of DDD’s sequels…hahahha…

Mary!!

Looking back, I kinda hated it too. I mean, how could have I been so foolish to fall for such adverts? Not just the toys were crap, even the chocs were of no quality type. It shows how dumb kids can be.

*the shoulder pads was a huge trend back then. Even baju kurung fashion was not spared. You’re not alone on this, my mom and aunts will never admit it was them in pics taken during the 80s..hehehehe…

shah,

errm…ada ke western during that era? the only that I have in mind right now is high chaparral…and that was back in the late 60s…hehehehe…

* pernah tengok Debbie does dallas? Hehhehhehhehehe…

I memang tak tahan MAKSIMA with all those Mat Sentul commercials!

Anyway, to add to your list - what about The Return of The Saint? The Man from Atlantis? CHiP(s?)? And how could you forget The Six Million Dollar Man and The Bionic Woman?!! (Or...ke all the above were in the 70's and you were still in your diapers then? Hmmmm...maybe?)

Hai Kerp,
Mat Sentul the Badang man .... whatever happened to him now.

Chocolates still could not live without it till now especially the Kit Kat.

kerp, you forgot to mention the all-important Big League Soccer presented by the late Brian Moore. And of course Road To Wrmbley.

Don't tell me these programmes didn't have an impact on you!

Knight Rider! And McGuyver! A-Team! Shit man TV back in the 80's and 90's were gooood

Kak E,

Yes! I remember that time. I wasn’t interested but the elders were talking about it so much. Then all of sudden we had our own Dallas, called PJ…ingat tak? Aziz singah was like our own JR…hihihi…lawak betul.

Kak shana,

Yea, now looking back, I hated it to bits.

In your list, one got me really excited; Chips! Gosh, how could I not remember chips. I was so into it when rode my chopper bicycle back then I’d imagine I was punch o’bello, the police officer played by eric Estrada. Ahh,,those were the days la kak…

Dato J,

Yea, what happened to him now I wonder. I mean, is he still around, as in, very much alive?

*I’m a choc-freak too. Picnic bars, mars and M&M’s.

Bala,

No way I can forget these two football shows, especially Big League Soccer. My dad would be glued to the tele and I’d be sitting next to him asking all sorts of q. me and bro learned a lot about the English league back then. Only regret is it wasn’t up-to-date so all the matches highlighted were at least a month old.

*remember the footie mags, Match and Shoot? Learned all the footballers name from these 2 mags. An uncle brought stacks of them back from the UK. I even had a poster of a certain Scottish and ex-hammer, frank McAvennie up on the wall…hehehehehe…

T man,

Eh, you sure you managed to catch these shows? This was way back in the 80s, when you were only what, 5? I believe your time Beverly hills, 90210 was huge. No?
